LAW ENFORCEMENT

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is the largest sheriff's department in the world. In addition to specialized services, such as the Sheriff's Youth Foundation, International Liaison and Employee Support Services, the Department is divided into eleven divisions, each headed by a Division Chief.

There are three patrol divisions, Field Operations Regions I, II and III. Administrative Services Division, Custody Operations Division, Correctional Services Division, Detective Division, Court Services Division, Technical Services Division, Office of Homeland Security, and Leadership and Training Division.

The creation of what loosely may be called the City of Los Angeles first Police Department came about from an 1853 murder. The victim was Jack Whaling, the areas second City Marshal. His killer met death at the hands of a bounty hunter. This prompted the City’s first "Chief," Dr. A.W. Hope, to start "The Los Angeles Rangers," who volunteered to assist the beleaguered County Sheriff and Marshal. The Rangers were identified by a white ribbon bearing the imprint in both English and Spanish "City Police - Authorized by the Council of Los Angeles."

Crime in Los Angeles

The distribution of murders in the city is uneven with almost half of homicides occurring in the four stations of the South Bureau of the LAPD encompassing South Los Angeles and the Harbor area. Criminality peaked in 1992 with 72,667 recorded acts of violence of which 1,096 were homicides and 245,129 recorded property crimes. The year before, Los Angeles recorded 1,025 murders.
