Monterey County is well know for it's coastline, along with Big Sur, California Highway 1, and the 17 Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula. The people of the county got its name from Monterey Bay. The word itself is of the Spanish words monte and rey, which means "Hill" and "King". The beautiful bay forms a natural defense barrior along the Pacific Ocean. The bay was named Monterey Bay by Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602, in honor of Gaspar de Zuniga y Acevedo, Conde de Monterrey, the Viceroy of New Spain.
The City of Salinas is the current county seat.

The County Seat of Monterey County is Salinas
The city's most serious problems is violent crime-gangs. But while the city's current violent crime rate is above the national average, historic trends suggest improvement.
The rate of homicides per 100,000 persons has remained largely stagnant since the mid 1980s, having returned from its record high levels in mid and late 1990s.
|
Salinas started around 1847 as the Halfway House, a stagecoach stop between Monterey and the town of San Juan Bautista. In 1867, a post office was established, Salinas City was laid out, and the city was incorporated ten years later.
The city was named after the Salinas River. |
