COUNTY OF COCONINO
ARIZONA- FACTS AND INFORMATION.
The Atlantic & Pacific Railroad in 1883 allowed rapid growth for the people of the northern reaches of Arizona State. Their numbers grew and they petitioned for their own county jurisdiction. In 1891 Coconino County was formed. Coconino County is located in north central Arizona.
Part of the Flagstaff, Arizona Metropolitan area, Coconino's population was 116,320 (according to the 2000 census; current estimated population is well over 125,000). Flagstaff. is the county seat.
Coconino County is the US Mainland's second largest county, just behind San Bernardino County in the state of California.
Coconino County is home to the Grand Canyon National Park, the Havasupai Nation, and parts of the Navajo Nation, Hualapai Nation, and Hopi Nation. Coconino takes its name from Cosnino, a name applied to the Havasupai.
Krazy Kat, the comic strip by George Herriman, was set in Coconino County. 30% of the county's total population is American Indian, being mostly Navajo and smaller numbers of Havasupai, Hopi, and others.
